For the launch of the ESM-Profitero Pan-European Price Survey, Profitero compared the prices of selected A-brands at supermarkets in the UK, Ireland and France. From this initial sample survey, ESM analysed the results to understand how retailers are using prices in these three markets.
In the UK, regular promotions are an everyday strategy tool with prices often artificially low, albeit for a short time. In a survey of an identical basket of everyday baskets, from nappies to cereal, ESM analysis reveals that Sainsbury’s was 82% of the cost for a similar basket at Tesco.
However analysis of champagne brand Veuve Cliquot shows the largest disparity in price between the rival supermarkets (priced at €28.50 at Sainsbury’s and €44.92 at Tesco).
What ESM discovers to be most surprising is the price differential between Tesco UK and Tesco Ireland. In the same basket, only Sprite and Carte D’Or are more expensive to purchase in the UK, with all other products coming in at a higher cost if you were to purchase them at Tesco Ireland.
