Retail Intelligence: Retail drives UK B2C sales higher

A new report from eMarketer reveals that UK consumers are some of the biggest ecommerce users in the world. The analyst firm predicts that UK business-to-consumer (B2C) sales will account for £62.49 billion in 2013, rising to £89.73 billion – or 16% of total UK retail sales – by 2017.

The report “UK B2C Ecommerce: Multichannel Shopping Reshaping Consumer Buying Habits” finds that UK retail ecommerce sales will represent 70.5% of B2C ecommerce sales this year, with the mature travel sector accounting for the remaining share.

eMarketer quotes figures from the Interactive Media in Retail Group, which estimates that UK online retail sales made by consumers outside the UK will total £10 billion in 2013, a year-on-year increase of approximately 35%.

Mobile ecommerce sales are also seeing strong growth as a proportion of the UK’s B2C retail ecommerce sales. According to eMarketer, shopping via tablets and smartphones has greatly contributed to the increase in UK’s digital sales with sales via mobile devices expected to rise 71.8% to £6.61 billion this year -15% of total UK online retail sales.
