Tesco, the world’s third largest retailer, has launched an online shopping service in Slovakia.
Following on from launching eCommerce operations in the Czech Republic and Poland earlier this year, Tesco’s new online business in Slovakia enables shoppers in Bratislava and nearby areas to purchase national brands and private-label items online for home delivery. The webstore has almost 20,000 lines of fresh and frozen food, additional groceries and non-food items such as toys and magazines.
Tesco started operating in Slovakia six years ago. The retailer now had more than 9,500 staff supporting more than 126 stores in the country. Martin Dlouhý, chief executive of Tesco Slovakia, said the service would help Slovak customers to save time.
Ken Towle, online food and Internet retailing director at Tesco, said, “We’ve used our learning and experience from our existing online operations in the UK, Ireland, South Korea, and more recently in the Czech Republic and Poland, to create an innovative IT platform that is industry leading and scalable.” Going online will also give Tesco Slovakia the opportunity to monitor its online pricing against the competitor, and use the pricing intelligence for future retail price intelligence projects and marketing campaigns.
Tesco operates over 6,000 stores in 13 countries in Europe, Asia and North America, and employs over 500,000 people. (12 Oct)
